It not only held the harp but held the folding chair and mat as well. The mat had sockets for the chair’s front legs to fit into attaching the chair to the mat and giving the musician more control of the instrument. The Folding Harp Chair and Mat were especially useful for harpists who did not want their chair and harp to slip away from each other while playing. There are also accessories in this catalog. Lyon & Healy Harp, 1916, pages 30-31, Style 23 Double Action Harp. Its body was constructed of curly maple wood while the enlarged sounding board was made of old spruce wood with lengthwise grain to prevent cracking. Described as having a “rich, mellow and very powerful” tone, it was designed particularly for the use of concert and symphony orchestras. Lyon & Healy Harp, 1916, unnumbered pages preceding title page, Louis XV Harp with Chair, Rack, and Lamp. This includes, among others, the taper spindle action developed in 1893 to prevent buzzing or other noises and the enlarged sounding board patented in 1895. The catalog also describes features of the harp developed by the company. Lyon & Healy produced their first harp in 1889 and a few years later, in 1893, won the Grand Prize at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It begins by describing the development of the Lyon & Healy Harp and a bit about harps in general. The catalog is entitled Lyon & Healy Harp (1916) by Lyon & Healy. This month, let’s look at a trade catalog advertising harps. Along with learning pieces, students will become well-rounded musicians by also working on music theory, scales and arpeggios, technical exercises, orchestral excerpts, music history relevant to their current pieces, and confidence with performing. This year, 2019, is the Smithsonian Year of Music, so how about looking at some music-related material in the Trade Literature Collection? In February, we highlighted mandolins and harmonicas. In my teaching I emphasize musicality and expression, achieved by proper technique, and keeping the body relaxed and in line with the instrument to prevent tension and injury. This is a fun way for students to showcase their hard work and build their confidence performing in front of others! Group lessons and other extra activities, such as service opportunities and workshops, are also incorporated throughout the year. Recitals are held twice a year and are welcome for students of any skill level to participate in. 30-minute lessons are advisable mostly for younger students. Lessons can be 30 minutes or one hour long. Lessons are held once every week, and payment is due at the beginning of the month. You can also rent harps through Lyon & Healy, Harps Etc, and The Harp Connection. Purchasing routes for Utah residents include Lyon & Healy in Salt Lake City, Summerhayes Music in Murray, or used options such as KSL CLassifieds. You can purchase new or used harps, or rent a harp. I love teaching and welcome pupils of all ages, with or without previous musical training! I teach both lever and pedal harp, and in my studio I have one concert grand extended pedal harp, one mid-sized lever harp, and one small lap harp.Ī harp of your own is essential for practice outside of lessons. The harp is a great instrument to learn because of its uniqueness and diverse musical capacity. Learning an instrument is rewarding, challenging, and amazing.
